English summary: Transportation policy has long been seen as a stepchild of European integration, though the Contracting States of the European Economic Community did ascribe a vital role to transportation for the internal market in 1957. However, the Commission's proposals for a comprehensive approach to transport policy were largely destroyed between market and public interests in the 1980s. Volker Ebert and Phillip-Alexander Harter investigate the origins of the common European transport policy from an economic historical perspective. They analyze the political decision-making processes and the different traditions and concepts of the member states and link transportational development. Particular attention is given to the question of whether and to what extent decline of the railways oberved in all countries of the EEC and the simultaneous rise of the road is a consequence of political decisions that may have been wrong. Zwar dachten die Vertragsstaaten der Europaischen Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft dem Transportwesen 1957 eine vitale Rolle fur den Binnenmarkt zu. Dennoch wurden die Vorschlage der Kommission fur ein verkehrspolitisches Gesamtkonzept bis in die 1980er Jahre zwischen markt- und gemeinwirtschaftlichen Interessen weitgehend aufgerieben.Volker Ebert und Phillip-Alexander Harter untersuchen die Anfange der gemeinsamen europaischen Verkehrspolitik in wirtschaftshistorischer Perspektive. Sie analysieren die politischen Entscheidungsprozesse sowie die unterschiedlichen Traditionen und Konzeptionen der Mitgliedstaaten und verknupfen sie mit der verkehrswirtschaftlichen Entwicklung.
